Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, was angry when Arsenal shocked everyone by outsmarting them in a £155 million deal to get rising star Ousmane Diomande and productive striker Viktor Gyokeres.
According to Guardiola, the fact that the Gunners waited for Guardiola to check out Diomande before putting in a serious offer shows a pattern in how they play tactically.
The 20-year-old back for Sporting, Diomande, has been a sought-after prospect in the Premier League after doing well in Portugal.
As a result of his aggression, skill in the air, and ability to play out from the back, many people see him as a possible “complete defender.”
Arsenal has already made a £30 million offer and is said to be eager to sign Diomande. Manager Mikel Arteta has been a fan of the player since he made his debut at FC Midtjylland.
Manchester City and Newcastle United have also joined the hunt for Diomande, but Arsenal still seems to be in the clear.
The Gunners are also interested in Gyokeres, a centre forward for Sporting who has scored 15 goals in 18 games this season. Last season, Gyokeres had an amazing run at Coventry City. He has now appeared as an alternative striker option for Arsenal, competing with Gabriel Jesus for the No. 9 spot.
Arsenal’s interest in both players shows that they want to improve both the defence and the offence of the team.
But it costs a lot because Sporting wants full release clause payments for moves made in the middle of the season. With Gyokeres’ release option set at €100 million (£86 million) and Diomande’s at €80 million (£69 million), Arsenal will have to spend a lot of money—£155 million—to get both players in the next transfer window.
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim said that the club didn’t want to sell in January and that meeting release clauses was the only way to make that happen.
Even though it will cost a lot, Arsenal seems eager to add the two promising players to their team, which will mess up Manchester City’s plans.
