After England star Kalvin Phillips scored his first goal for Manchester City since coming last year, the manager had nothing but good things to say about the midfielder.

After Kalvin Phillips scored his first goal for Manchester City in their 3-2 win over Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, Pep Guardiola gave him high marks.

Phillips only made his second start of the season for the defending winners in the winners League game, but he made sure to leave his mark on it. Even though it was close, City did just enough to win all three points and keep their perfect record in the league this season.

At the time, City was ahead 2-1, and a penalty kick was given. At first, it looked like Phil Foden would step up and take it. On the game, though, Phillips and Bernardo Silva talked about it, and it was decided that the former Leeds star would be put in charge of scoring.

He did what was asked, which made manager Guardiola very happy. At the end of the game, Guardiola went on and on about Phillips’ skill from the penalty spot. “He takes things so well,” he said. “I know Phil really wanted to do it, but Kalvin is a great penalty taker.”

There is a lot of talk about Phillips’ future since he has only played 30 times since moving from Elland Road to the Etihad last year. He needs to play a lot of club football if he wants to keep his chances of making the England team for the Euros next summer alive.

Juventus and Newcastle are two teams that have been linked with a move for the player. The City manager was asked if Phillips would still be at the club after the January transfer window closed, but he didn’t want to say anything.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he stated. “Now he’s here and there are a lot of games until the end of January and hopefully he can help us.”
