Alan Shearer said that Levi Colwill, a defender for Chelsea, should not have helped Manchester United score their second goal in Wednesday’s Premier League match.
During the first half, Scott McTominay scored two goals for United. This meant that Chelsea couldn’t build on their 3-2 win over Brighton on Sunday.
There were more than 25 shots on goal for the home team during the game, and the Blues looked tired and out of ideas as they tried to defend against each attack.
Colwill failed to keep out of the way of McTominay’s second goal of the night as he ran to get his head on an Alejandro Garnacho cross, which was bad defence. Instead, the centre back (who was playing left back) went down too easily, and the judge insisted that the goal would stand even after VAR looked at it again.
Shearer criticised Colwill for going to the ground too quickly and agreed with the referee’s choice not to call a foul. He said this on Amazon Prime Sport.
He said, “Colwill’s defence there is really weak.” They both had their arms around each other, so you can tell they were fighting.
“VAR looked at it, but there was never a foul. It was never going to be enough to be turned over.” That’s where the defence should handle it.
“But good job, McTominay. He wanted it more than the defender did, and he got it. It wins the game for them.”
“The left-back, he went down really softly there,” agreed Patrice Evra, who was also a radio host on the network. “He was too weak.”
The great Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink of Chelsea said, “It’s a goal.” You need to be strong in your box to protect it. You can’t lose a ball at the second post, no matter how big, tall, or small you are.
