Both teams had plenty of opportunities, but United’s first significant one ended in a penalty after Enzo Fernandez fouled Antony in the box. Bruno Fernandes volunteered to take the spot kick, but Robert Sanchez stopped his shoddy attempt admirably.
After applying further pressure, the home team eventually opened the score a few moments later when the ball started to bounce around in the penalty area. A pass intended for Harry Maguire was deflected, but it ended up at the feet of Scott McTominay, who scored again. McTominay has been scoring goals lately.
Following the goal, McCoist gave an explanation of how Jackson might have contributed to the goal by giving up control rather than initiating a counterattack. “He won’t like me for saying it, but Nicolas Jackson [is at fault] for giving the ball away,” he said in an interview with Amazon Prime Video.
Sterling was wide to the right, giving Chelsea a great chance to counter. Jackson gives it away, Maguire’s shot is blocked, and McTominay does a fantastic job of following it up, but Chelsea believes that this is a goal they should have won. Jackson, please take hold of it; he is impoverished.”
It remains to be seen if that goal will have a significant effect on the Blues, but it did represent a challenging beginning to the game that they will want to forget.
