After a controversial call by referee Simon Hooper in Sunday’s draw with Tottenham, Manchester City has been charged with not being able to handle their players.
The referee called a foul on Jack Grealish when he was clear on goal, even though England had the ball at first. Erling Haaland was so angry about this that he stormed down the tunnel at full-time and then posted an expletive response on social media.
The FA has now said that City was not able to control how their players reacted, but they will not punish Haaland directly. At the same time, PGMOL has decided if Simon Hooper will be a judge again this week.
Haaland does not get punished by the FA, but City is charged.
After City’s controversial draw with Tottenham, Haaland wrote something on social media that seemed to criticise the judges. He will not be punished for this, but the Blues are being charged with failing to control their players.
At the Etihad, City and Manchester United played to a 3-3 draw. However, the wake of the game was overshadowed by referee Simon Hooper’s late decision to stop a counterattack in the 94th minute for a foul, even though Jack Grealish was sent through on goal.
After Haaland was fouled, Hooper first told the team to play on, but the striker got up to set up Grealish for what could have been the game-winner for City. When Hooper then moved the ball back, Haaland was very angry, and the whole City team gathered around the referee to complain.
PGMOL makes a choice about judge Hooper
As of this week’s appointments, referee Simon Hooper will not be punished for the mistake he made late in Manchester City’s draw with Tottenham.
When Erling Haaland was hit, Hooper first said “play on,” but then he stopped the game for a free kick after Haaland got up and set up Jack Grealish for a clear shot on goal. This made the City team very angry.
After the game, Guardiola, the manager of City, refused to attack Hooper, saying that the official’s call had nothing to do with the outcome. However, he did say that Hooper would be unhappy with his choice in hindsight.
