Brighton fans and players were furious that a little-known VAR rule cost the Seagulls a late corner when they were trying to tie the game at Chelsea on Sunday.
The Blues won 3-2 at Stamford Bridge thanks to two goals from Enzo Fernandez. However, Joao Pedro scored in extra time to make it 3-2, and there was more drama when referee Craig Pawson seemed to give the Seagulls a penalty.
But after a VAR check, Pawson looked at the screen and decided that Levi Colwill, who used to be on loan at Brighton, was not guilty of touch even though the ball hit his face before going out for a corner kick.
The rules of VAR say that the game starts over from a drop ball when a call is overturned, not from where the action stopped.
This made the Brighton players angry because they weren’t given a chance to try to score a goal from the set piece.
In this case, Pawson followed the rules properly, but that didn’t stop some fans from complaining online about “corruption.”
On X (which used to be Twitter), one fan wrote, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!?????”
“VAR should (wrongly) suggest an on-field review for handball.” It wasn’t given, which is fine, but the ball went out for our corner to us!! But the ref starts over with a dropped ball!
“ANY MORE UTTER SHAMBLES!!!”
Another platform user had to explain what was going on, which sports fans don’t usually know. They wrote, “Unfortunately, that’s the law now.” If VAR calls back a penalty, the ball will be dropped and go to the custodian.
A third person said, “We didn’t even get a corner. What the hell is this,”
Some users, though, had a better idea of how Pawson applied the law and said, “The referee made the right call.” Fans of Brighton should be quiet.
They scored two goals in the first half, giving Chelsea a two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge.
Facundo Buonanotte scored a smart shooting goal from inside the box to make it 2-1 for Brighton. However, Blues captain Conor Gallagher was sent off for a second yellow card.
In the 65th minute, Fernandez scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1 to the home team. However, Joao Pedro’s goal in the 92nd minute made for an exciting finish.
Brighton couldn’t score a third goal in the end, so they left London empty-handed.
Now, Brighton has three straight home games. First, they play Brentford in the league, then Burnley, and finally Marseille in the Europa League group stage.
