We’re thrilled to inform that sports journalist Paul Brown has been speaking to Give Me Sport about Chelsea captain Reece James, and he’s as optimistic as we are about how fantastic the right defender can be if he can only stay fit for the rest of the season.

He struggled against Newcastle, but he’s been fantastic in his other games since returning to fitness. Mauricio Pochettino appears determined to manage him with caution. We truly like watching Malo Gusto come on because it means James has survived another game without being harmed.

Brown reflected on the full back’s red card against Newcastle and his upcoming season:

“By definition, if you’re sent off in a game, you’re letting your team down because you’re leaving them with ten men for the rest of the game.” But James is one of Chelsea’s top players, so I won’t be too harsh on him. I believe he is a vital member of that squad. Losing him to suspension after battling injuries for the past two seasons is a setback. “But I still expect him to come back and be one of their best players this season, and there’s no reason to think he won’t,” Brown added.

“I’m sure he’ll be cursing himself; I’m sure he’s frustrated.” But I would classify James as world-class, and I believe Chelsea will rely heavily on him this season. So, as long as his head is in the right place, his form improves, and he avoids injury, I believe he’ll be back and doing a key job for them in the coming months.”

Concerns about his head being in the appropriate place appear to be unfounded. He doesn’t appear to be the sort to be easily sidetracked, and there have never been any doubts about his work rate or attitude; it’s only his body that has held him back.

The red card against Newcastle was ridiculous, but he has plenty of time to make amends if he can just remain fit.
