Michael Richards backs off his claim that Pep Guardiola will be the next boss of England.
Micah Richards said that Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, would be a great choice to take over as England manager from Gareth Southgate.
Since being hired in 2016, the Spaniard is in the middle of his eighth season as manager of the Citizens.
As things stand, the 52-year-old’s contract at the Etihad Stadium will end in the summer of 2025. However, Guardiola has now been brought up in a conversation about who might be the next England boss.
When asked about the chance of Guardiola taking over as England’s manager, Richards said this on a recent episode of The Rest Is Football.
When we talked about it, he said, “Should the England manager be English? I think I said probably not.” It doesn’t matter what as long as you win.

“But I just think that Pep could make that one small change to get us over the line if you could choose who the best coach is.”
In September, it was said that the FA might try to get Guardiola to take over as England manager when Southgate’s deal runs out after next year’s European Championship.
Richards thinks the City manager could bring what worked for them at club level to the England team, even though he has never managed a national team before. This is because he won three Champions League wins with City.
