Rodri and Jack Grealish, two stars for Manchester City, are one yellow card away from a Premier League ban. If they get a yellow card in Saturday’s game against Liverpool, they will miss one game.
Players who get five yellow cards in their team’s first 19 league games have to miss the next game in the tournament. When City’s next Premier League game is over, it will be against Tottenham on December 3. Three days later, they will go to Aston Villa.
Rodri got his name taken when he downed Cole Palmer, a former Blues player, in the 72nd minute of City’s 4-4 draw with Chelsea. He got a yellow card against Fulham, West Ham and Brighton as well.
Since being sent off for fighting in City’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in September, the 27-year-old has already missed three games across all competitions this season.
The team that won the Treble lost all three games that Rodri wasn’t in: the 1-0 League Cup loss to Newcastle, the 2-1 Premier League loss to Wolves, and the 1-0 league loss to Arsenal.
Grealish’s four yellow cards in the Premier League seem to have the same pattern. All but one have been shown late in extra time at the end of the game. One was shown for a fight near the end of City’s loss to Wolves.
The yellow cards he got against Forest and Chelsea came in extra time, and the one he got against Brighton was in the 84th minute. All of them happened after he was brought on as a replacement.
He hasn’t been suspended in the Premier League since March 2015, when he was playing for Aston Villa. As of now, he has not been banned from any Manchester City game.
For the next seven Premier League games, he and Rodri will have to walk a fine line. After that, the limit goes up to 10 yellow cards, but if they hit it before the club’s 32nd gameweek, they will be banned for two games.
