Scotland are interested in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, hoping he would switch allegiances following his latest England rebuff.

Gordon has made numerous appearances for England’s under-21s and helped the Young Lions win the European Championship last summer. Gareth Southgate’s team has games against Malta and North Macedonia coming up, but Gordon has been ignored.

He’s thrived since joining Newcastle from Everton, netting goals against the Magpies’ main rivals. That hasn’t been enough to persuade England’s manager to select him in his next team, and the Daily Record reports that Scotland is now seeking to pounce.

England’s wide forwards have included Jarrod Bowen, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden, which means Gordon has no place. Scotland would greatly benefit from having someone of his calibre in their squad, especially with the Euros coming up next year.

Scotland did admirably in qualification but failed to make an impression at their most recent major tournament several years ago. And Gordon is just one of several English players who aren’t currently on the national squad who Scotland is attempting to persuade to switch.

Newcastle’s forward was born in Merseyside, although he is eligible to play for Scotland due to his paternal grandparents. His Newcastle teammates Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento are also thought to have piqued Scotland’s interest. Scotland’s assistant manager, John Carver, acknowledged that they are looking for new players.

“If someone has a Scottish relative, we have to look into it,” he stated. It is then up to him to decide, but we are mindful that these are important decisions concerning their future. Newcastle is my team, and I watch them more than anyone else. We are aware that they have a number of quality players who have never been capped by England at senior level but are eligible for Scotland.”

England recently defeated Scotland in an international friendly at Hampden Park, with the Three Lions winning 3-1. Among their current offensive threats are Lyndon Dykes and Ryan Christie.
