This dip in his status within the team followed his arrival from Everton in 2016. At that time, The Guardian reported Guardiola stating that Stones would “have the chance” to prove himself.

However, the present narrative paints a different picture. Stones has not only reclaimed his position in the defense but has also showcased his adaptability, excelling in a distinctive midfield role. Guardiola’s initial perspective on Stones, who was initially considered less critical, has transformed significantly.

Gullit, while discussing Guardiola’s managerial prowess, emphasized the manager’s ability to adapt and highlighted the transformative role of one pivotal moment, stating, “How much did he spend to get the players at the back? Stones was not even his most important player; he put him on the bench. Then later he found out, oh, he can play in midfield. Sometimes just one thing can change it.”

Stones’ journey at Manchester City, marked by uncertainties about his future at one point, took a remarkable turn as he played a pivotal role in the team’s triumphant campaign, including securing a treble.

However, Stones is currently grappling with a setback – an injury sustained in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over BSC Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League. Having only recently returned from a prolonged absence due to hip and hamstring issues, the 29-year-old is now sidelined again.

Guardiola expressed concern, acknowledging that Manchester City is “in trouble,” and informed that Stones will be out “for a while,” posing a significant challenge for the team.
