Frank Lampard, the revered Chelsea icon and former coach, has shed light on his decision not to include John Terry as part of his coaching staff during his two managerial tenures at Chelsea. Lampard’s first stint as Chelsea’s manager occurred from 2019 to 2021, and he returned for a brief period in the previous season as a caretaker manager following the dismissal of Graham Potter.

In explaining the absence of his former teammate, John Terry, from his coaching staff, Lampard shared his perspective during a conversation on John Obi Mikel’s Obi One podcast. He emphasized his profound respect for Terry on various levels, indicating that the decision regarding Terry’s role was not his to answer but rather one that the club needed to make.

Regarding his own experience, Lampard described the rapid nature of the club’s approach. He had just about a day to decide whether to accept the managerial role. The club’s requirement was to bring in two new staff members, a significant decision for any manager. Lampard had a history of working with his staff at Chelsea, Derby, and Everton.

Ultimately, he brought in three staff members, with Ashley Cole joining the team to oversee set pieces during his time at Everton. Lampard’s choices for his coaching staff were Chris Jones and Joe Edwards, leaving no room for additional appointments.

Lampard’s explanation provides insight into the complex dynamics of assembling a coaching staff, showcasing the practical considerations and historical working relationships that influenced his decisions.
