Manchester United’s coach Ruben Amorim has named the only striker he wants at the club this summer
Manchester United are reportedly keeping close tabs on one of Europe’s hottest goal-scorers as they prepare for another summer rebuild.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult Premier League season, sitting in 14th place with only 33 points from 27 matches. A lack of firepower up front has been a key issue, and new manager Rúben Amorim is said to be pushing for a reliable striker ahead of the next campaign.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Viktor Gyökeres is expected to leave Sporting CP at the end of the season, and the Portuguese champions are ready to negotiate a deal below his official £84 million release clause. According to Romano, Sporting will consider offers in the region of £55 million to £63 million due to a gentleman’s agreement they have with the Swedish forward.
Gyökeres is well-regarded by Amorim, and the admiration appears to be mutual. However, a potential move to Old Trafford may come down to how much United can afford to spend and whether they secure a spot in next season’s Champions League. Player departures are expected to be necessary to fund new arrivals, as Amorim has made it clear the club must sell before buying.
Romano stated that United’s admiration for Gyökeres is genuine, but financial flexibility will play a decisive role — just like in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen. The club’s transfer activity is likely to hinge on their final league position and access to European football.
Gyökeres joined Sporting CP from Coventry City in 2023 and delivered an exceptional debut season, netting 43 goals and providing 15 assists in 50 matches. He’s followed that up with another outstanding campaign, scoring 37 goals and assisting nine times in just 39 appearances. His consistency has drawn attention across the continent, but his high release clause previously scared off many top clubs.
With Sporting now open to offers at a more reasonable price and potential for a staggered payment structure, Gyökeres could finally be on the move — and United look like serious contenders.
