Jorginho may be allowed to leave Arsenal barely a year after joining from Chelsea, with Barcelona showing interest in the midfielder – but Declan Rice has praised him.
Barcelona are considering a move for out-of-favour Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, according to Declan Rice, who claims the Italian astonished him’so much’ in Gunners training.
Both midfielders joined the north London club this year; Jorginho joined Mikel Arteta’s side from Chelsea in January, while Rice became Arsenal’s club record signing this summer after leaving West Ham.
Jorginho has only played a minor role in Arteta’s side since his arrival, initially as an understudy to Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey in the starting lineup before falling behind Rice in the pecking order. This season, the midfielder has only started one Premier League game.
Oriol Romeu was bought from Girona, but Xavi is looking for another midfielder, with Jorginho among those being watched. Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich, Thiago Alcantara of Liverpool, and Guido Rodriguez of Real Betis are all on their radar.
Jorginho may not have made an impact in Arsenal’s games, but he is the player that has jumped out to England international Rice on the training pitch. Since joining the Emirates, the former Hammers skipper has remarked about how much he has learned from the Brazilian-born star.
Rice told Channel 4’s Joe Cole, “The one who surprised me so much, not surprised because I knew he was such a good player anyway.” Jorginho is practising with him every day and watching how he is because he is not the biggest.
“I’ve just been trying to pick up little things off of his brain, the way it works as a holding midfielder.” He’s always in position, he knows when to pass, he always makes time for himself, and he’s an excellent trainer.”
Jorginho has made 24 first-team appearances for Arsenal since joining from their London rivals, the majority of which have come as substitutes. He formerly played seven seasons in Italian football for Verona and Napoli, where he helped Italy win Euro 2020.
