‘I just think if I was in his position I could have left the Club’: Jamie Carragher has a new theory behind why £150k-a-week star is hardly playing for Man City
Jamie Carragher has proposed a reason why Kalvin Phillips may not be playing as much for Manchester City as he should.
Again this season, the midfielder has struggled to find playing time.
Pep Guardiola has consistently ignored the 27-year-old.
Rodri has started the majority of the games at holding midfield.
The Spaniard is a world-class operator, and Phillips will have a difficult time breaking into the side.
However, Rodri just served a three-game suspension, and Pep only used Phillips once.
Carragher discussed Phillips on The Overlap and speculated on why he might not be popular with the manager.
Kalvin Phillips, according to Jamie Carragher, may not be imposing his personality sufficiently at Manchester City.
Some argue that Phillips is simply not good enough to play for City.
That the standard is too high for him.
Carragher, on the other hand, does not feel it is a matter of ability.
Phillips, he believes, is not exerting his personality sufficiently.
“I just think if I was in that position and a manager wasn’t picking me, I’d be treating training like a game,” he remarked. Every day, almost. I’m not denying that he (trains well). We all give our all during training.
“Whatever it is, he needs to be in the manager’s face.” At Liverpool, it seemed like every season I was being replaced by a new player taking my place. Every day, I’d be a madman, thinking, “I’ve got to be better than him.”
“My point is, make sure you’re noticed every day, whether it’s your voice, you’re being loud, you’re leaving a tackle in on someone, you’re going to speak to the manager ‘OK I don’t understand the position, explain it to me’.”
Phillips was always going to struggle against Rodri.
Phillips, who has been linked with a January departure from City, may not have imposed himself sufficiently at the club.
Regardless, competing with Rodri was always going to be difficult for him.
