While Raheem Sterling’s continued exclusion from the England team is notable because he was once thought to be one of Gareth Southgate’s reliable players, the Three Lions manager can rest easy knowing that they still have a lot of good attacking options.

But Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have that luxury. He had to bring Sterling back into the starting lineup, and it was the winger who helped his Chelsea team get out of the Turf Mire.

With a goal down just before halftime, it looked like the Blues might be dozing off on their way to their first-ever Premier League loss at this Lancashire stadium. They had the ball most of the time but hadn’t shown any ambition or skill for almost thirty minutes since Wilson Odobert’s breakaway opener.

But in short spurts before and after halftime, Sterling set up the two goals that changed the game, and then he scored his own third goal to seal the 4-1 win for the visitors. They go into the international break having won their first back-to-back league games since March.

After coming off the bench at Fulham on Monday night, Sterling wasn’t expected to come back right away here. Mykhailo Mudryk scored his first goal for Chelsea at Craven Cottage, showing signs of life, and has since been declared fit after a scare with an injury. Sterling, on the other hand, had a great start to the season but hadn’t scored or set up a goal since late August, when he scored two at Luton. Pochettino, on the other hand, was rewarded for not doing what his international manager told him to do.

Sterling made his fortune with the equalizer. He ducked past two players to get to the byline, and his cross hit Ameen Al Dakhil’s thigh and went over James Trafford, who was stuck. For the second, he didn’t get very far because Vitinho sped into the box from the side and smashed him. That left Cole Palmer, who may soon be another England rival, to score from 12 yards out.

Southgate had seen a lot of value in Sterling during the first part of his time as England manager. This was the Sterling whose drive could be used to break down defenses in a team like Chelsea’s that wasn’t very creative naturally. After the break, Conor Gallagher sent him off, and he scored with his left foot, crossing the goalkeeper and going in. He showed the finishing touch that, after a rough start to his England career, made him, at one point, the only reliable scorer besides Harry Kane.

Southgate has more options now that Bukayo Saka is scoring goals regularly for his country, Phil Foden scored during the break, and Jude Bellingham is having a great season for Real Madrid. Sterling’s story in England doesn’t have to end yet, though. A few more afternoons like this one might be enough.
