‘He was so good and a baller I don’t know why Pep Guardiola made him Leave’- So good’: Matheus Nunes says he was amazed by £20m player Man City let go of

Matheus Nunes has stated that he was a great fan of former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

After captaining the Citizens to the treble at the end of last season, the German left the Etihad Stadium to join Barcelona as a free agent in June.

With Nunes now a member of Pep Guardiola’s side, the Portuguese international has heaped admiration on the former Manchester City captain.

Nunes had this to say about Gundogan in a recent video posted on the club’s official YouTube page.

“He’s so good,” he said. He sees everything before everyone else, and he knows what he’s going to do before the ball even touches his foot.

“He was also someone that I watched a lot, I like to watch videos of midfielders on YouTube and he was one I watched as well.”

Gundogan, who City paid £20 million to recruit in 2016, scored 60 goals and provided 40 assists in 304 appearances across all competitions, earning multiple trophies including five Premier League crowns.

Guardiola expressed his enthusiasm for the midfielder back in April, calling him a “exceptional” player, indicating that the German was highly regarded at the club.

This suggests that the Spaniard, as well as many City fans, will have been frustrated that Gundogan chose to quit the club and join Barcelona as a free agent rather than continue his adventure with the Citizens and sign a new contract.

Nunes’ ambition now is to be as productive and successful for the club as the former City great was.
